CAFRE Business postgraduates – Vienna study tour success

April 9, 2018

The College of Agriculture, Food and Rural Enterprise (CAFRE) through its Masters in Communication and more recently its Business for Agri-Food and Rural Enterprise (BAFRE) programmes have had a fifteen year ERASMUS link with the Agriculture Further and Higher Education College of Vienna (Hochschule Wien).

This year’s study tour involved workshops at the ‎Hochschule where the BAFRE students worked with their Austrian counterparts comparing the agri-food business sectors in both countries. The rest of the week involved students visiting many agri-food businesses in Austria including Hut und Stiel which uses recycled coffee granules to grow mushrooms and Adamah which deliveries 6000 organic fruit and vegetables baskets weekly to its loyal customer base throughout the country.

The students also carried out store audits comparing what Austrian supermarkets offer their customers compared to at home. On the final day of the trip students visited the Austrian Chamber for Agriculture which represents the agricultural sector in Austria.

Based upon the trip, up to four BAFRE students hope to avail of the ERASMUS funding which will allow them to undertake their Masters project ‎in Vienna over the summer 2018.  ‎The BAFRE course allows graduates from various disciplines such as agriculture, food, equine, business management and marketing to prepare for a career in Northern Ireland’s largest indigenous business sector.
