Micheál’s move to success with CAFRE

Micheál Callan graduated from the College of Agriculture, Food and Rural Enterprise (CAFRE) with an Ulster University validated food degree. Having previously studied on the National Diploma in Food Technology at Loughry Campus he progressed on to the BSc (Hons) Degree in Food Technology course, completing it in June 2020.

Following his studies at CAFRE, Micheál secured a position on the Linden Foods Graduate Scheme. “Graduate Schemes offer great insights into various departments within the business. I spent placements within New Product Development, Supply Chain and Purchasing, helping me develop a deeper understanding of the business operations,” commented Micheál.

“During my time at Loughry Campus we completed applied packaging modules so when I was tasked with trialling new packaging films for retail packs for Linden the project wasn’t overwhelming. I must admit I really enjoyed all the opportunities we had to practically apply our knowledge when at Loughry; whether that was in the Food Technology Centre, laboratories or the Food Innovation Centre,” added Micheál.

“ I have moved into the shipping and supply chain department. Brexit and Covid have impacted supply chains and food manufacturers need to be agile to adapt. Food products are highly perishable and ensuring management within supply chain can be complex. I am enjoying the challenges this area of work is offering me,” said Micheál.

“I have a twin brother who also studied alongside me at Loughry Campus. We both now work for Linden Foods and feel we have made great career choices. Having left Sperrin Integrated College at the age of 16 with an interest in food technology our educational path has certainly led us into a business who is a market leader within the Northern Ireland fresh meat processing industry. Opportunities within the food industry are bountiful and varied. I would certainly recommend that you check them out,” concluded Micheál.
