Does your heart have a racing beat?

Various Dates

Enniskillen Campus

As part of the Northern Ireland Science Festival Week activities for schools CAFRE is delighted to invite students to explore the heart. Equine staff at Enniskillen Campus are offering a hands-on workshop to focus on the functioning of the heart.

Tuesday 20th February 2024, 10.00am or 1.00pm

Wednesday 21st February 2024, 10.00am or 1.00pm

Thursday 22nd February 2024, 10.00am or 1.00pm

Imagine working out 24/7 and never getting tired! Our heart is the powerhouse of our body and does exactly that. Just like with horses, our heart pumps blood around the body throughout our lifetime. The horse’s heart is one of the most efficient pumps found in nature and is a major reason why horses are such excellent athletes.

With a focus on the GCSE Double Award Science specification, spend time in laboratory at CAFRE Enniskillen Campus looking at equine cardiology and performance. We’ll investigate comparisons between the human and horse heart. You’ll learn about the direction of blood flow, size and capacity alongside the interaction with other body systems with the use of equine models and equipment.

This workshop will be offered alongside The Equine FitBit – How far can you stride?, covering two topics within a two hour event.
