Tree Nursery, Cultra

Every day TCV works across the UK to create healthier and happier communities for everyone – communities where our activities have a lasting impact on people’s health, prospects and outdoor places.

Our Tree Nursery, Cultra is a unique project to Ireland, engaging volunteers in every stage of growing trees from seed, through to planting them in their forever home. Our Tree Nursery operated from Clandeboye Estate for over 30 years, relocating to grounds within Ulster Folk Museum in 2021. This has opened a wealth of new opportunities for TCV, with this being an exciting time to join our Team to shape and drive all aspects of our tree operations.

Job Specification

This is a captivating role that seamlessly blends developing our tree nursery with leading volunteers in hands-on engagement to grow native trees from seed. You’ll be based at our Tree Nursery at Cultra, designing and leading practical work to contribute to our ambitious Tree Nursery business plan. Collaborating closely with partner organisations, you will tailor and deliver high quality opportunities for volunteers, whilst increasing the volume of native trees grown year on year.

We’re seeking an individual with exceptional practical, communication and project leadership skills. Experience of working in a production horticulture nursery with a passion for our native trees and woodlands will be invaluable. The role demands outstanding practical skills with the ability to plan and deliver to a growing schedule to produce quality tree stock for retails (bare-root, potted and cell-grown).

A fundamental grasp of volunteer group dynamics, working with and engaging volunteers from all backgrounds, including youths at risk, ethnic minorities and corporate volunteers is a must.

But some things are constant; how good it feels to be part of a team making a real difference to the conservation of our native trees, and our promise that every day you will learn new skills, meet new people and have a positive impact!

Confidence of working with and maintenance of a range of practical horticulture / agriculture tools is essential, with experience of machinery (tractor driving, trailer use) a significant asset.

At TCV, we’re unwavering in our commitment to Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion. We firmly believe that everyone deserves a connection to nature. Collaborating with your team, you’ll champion the creation of secure and inviting spaces for individuals who face challenges in accessing green environments. This is especially pertinent for those who stand to gain the most. Your efforts will ensure that our initiatives remain pertinent and accessible to the diverse communities we serve.
