Dairy assistant is required to carry out routine daily work on a farm in Dromara, County Down. The farm would suit someone who wants to work with cattle and build on their previous experience or education, with an aim to progress to herd management.

Work is completed with a contractor for most of the machinery jobs so there is not much driving to do.  The cows are grazed with a low fuss approach, milking twice a day, calving in a main block (Sept-Dec) and a small block (Jan-April). The cows are seen as the most important job on the unit and seek to provide a good place to work for people.

Duties include: 
  • Milking 220 cross bred cows in 20 point swing over with ACRs
  • Looking after feet, feed and fertility on a daily basis
  • Easy feed silage system
Requirements:
  • Dependable transport
  • Interest in working with dairy cattle
  • Experience milking cows
Desirable skills: 
  • Telehandler license 
  • Basic machinery maintenance ability
  • Foot paring
  • Grass grazing measurement

Hours: 6am-6pm, for 4 weekdays each week and every other weekend.

Wage: Starting wage at £7.50. Can negotiate depending on skills and observable ability. 

Accommodation: Could be sought if required.
