Cerys Brown – CAFRE

My name is Cerys Brown and I am currently in my third year, studying the Level 3 Diploma in Veterinary Nursing course at Greenmount Campus. I am 34 years old and I have far too many animals – two cats, three rabbits, four guinea pigs, a chinchilla and two horses! When I’m not working, I will be up at the stables with my horses or out in my garden trying (with questionable success) to grow vegetables for the rabbits and guinea pigs. My husband and I do get a few occasionally too!

I worked in animal rescue for ten years before moving to Veterinary Nursing. It was very much a natural progression and I was lucky to get a position in the practice that provided veterinary care to the sanctuary animals. Knowing my new boss and colleagues well was a huge advantage and made the adjustment to working in a practice much easier.

I really enjoy all aspects of being a veterinary nurse, however I have a keen interest in anaesthesia so I especially enjoy my days in theatre. I also love meeting so many different patients and their owners each day. Building up a good rapport with the clients and their pets really brightens my day. There is nothing better than getting cuddles from a dog or cat that recognises you from their previous visit.

The last few years have been difficult for everyone. I certainly found it incredibly difficult trying to remain focussed on my studies while being run off my feet in work due to staff shortages and an increase in client demands.

Getting back into class at Greenmount Campus again has been strange, but welcome. I did enjoy studying at home, but face to face interaction with the teachers is so valuable and definitely something I missed.
