CAFRE

Dara Bradley from Kilrea completed the Level 3 Advanced Technical Extended Diploma in Land Based Engineering at CAFRE, Greenmount Campus in October 2022.

Why did you decide to study at CAFRE?

When looking for a course following completion of my GCSEs, I wanted a course that would offer hands on training. The Land-Based Engineering course at CAFRE had a good a mix of both theory and practical aspects, which really appealed to me. I have always had an interest in mechanical work and engineering from an early age, I knew the Land-based Engineering course would be a great start to my career. Another part that attracted me to studying in CAFRE was the chance to live away from home and living in residential accommodation for a period of the course.

What course did you study at CAFRE and how has it influenced your career?

I completed the Level 3 Advanced Technical Extended Diploma in Land Based Engineering at Greenmount Campus. This is a two year course and includes a period of work placement as part of the programme too. I thoroughly enjoyed my time at Greenmount Campus. The course is mainly taught in the Machinery and Buildings Centre, which is available to all engineering students for their practical classes. The modern equipment available ensures the best possible learning experience enabling me to ‘learn by doing’. This experience was invaluable as I was able to put my theory into practice when I commenced my work experience with John McElderry’s Motor & Tractors LTD, this was during the placement period of my course. It has then led me on to find current employment back where I started.

What is your current job and responsibilities?

I am currently employed as an apprentice service engineer John McElderry Motors & Tractors LTD, based in Ballymoney, Co. Antrim.

What is the best thing about your job?

There are several things that I really enjoy about my job. I have the opportunity to make new friends and meet new people. I am continually upskilling and getting to learn new things and I also get to work on a variety of manufactures products, which keeps me interested in what I really enjoy, agricultural machinery.

What is your fondest memory of your time at CAFRE?

CAFRE was a great place for me to meet new friends with similar interests in both agriculture and machinery. This, combined with the fact that I was able to stay in accommodation made the learning experience even more enjoyable. However, to top it off we had the opportunity to spend two nights away on study tour to the Republic of Ireland, visiting a number of dealers and manufacturers, including Meath Farm Machinery, Farmhand, Dromone Hitches, Samco Systems and Malone Machinery.

What advice would you give a new graduate?

There is an abundance of career opportunities out there and consider the bigger picture. Having a good balance of practical experience is extremely helpful and remember it is never too late to start learning.
