Enda Smyth – CAFRE Alumni

Enda Smyth graduated with a BSc (Hons) Degree in Equine Management from CAFRE in 2017. From completing his course Enda has established his own equine livery and training facility in Co. Monaghan – Sandstones Stable’s.

“I developed an interest in horses when I got my first pony. Living on a family farm gave me both the space and outdoor opportunities to own horses. Once I heard about CAFRE and the courses on offer I knew it was where I wanted to be. I left school at St. Macartan’s College, Monaghan and headed off to study at Enniskillen Campus.

My time at Enniskillen Campus didn’t disappoint! The Honours Degree course provided a great mixture of experience and learning. The three on campus equine yards allowed me to experience working with mares, sport and equitation horses.

As part of the course we had the opportunity to attend Point to Points and Thoroughbred sales; visits which opened my eyes to other aspects of the equine industry. Whilst studying at CAFRE I thoroughly enjoyed being a part of the show team and riding at national shows such as Balmoral.

Studying at Enniskillen Campus offered the best of both worlds; the blend of classroom and practical learning is what really stood out for me. The campus offers a great sense of community feeling and everyone looks out for and encourages each other”.

On reflecting about his career in the equine sector Enda says,

“I believe studying at CAFRE helped me choose the career right path. I learnt best practice in all aspects of yard work and developed the skills needed to establish and manage my own equine business. Work is what you make it, so keep an open mind, be adaptable and develop a positive work ethic. I do everything from mucking out, exercising horses, dealing with clients and keeping on top of business accounts. Everyday is a learning day, no matter what job role you are in.

If I was to summarise my college days at CAFRE, Enniskillen Campus I would use the words great friendships, inspiring opportunities and memorable experiences”.
