Adam Short – CAFRE Alumni

Adam Short from Omagh, is a an Equine graduate from CAFRE, Enniskillen Campus.

Why did you decide to study at CAFRE and how has it influenced your career?

I have always had a keen interest in horses, especially in show jumping and breeding.  I have worked with horses since my early teens.  Before leaving school I had my mind made up that I wanted to go to CAFRE to gain an equine qualification. I enrolled on the BSc (Hons) Degree in Equine Management at Enniskillen Campus in September 2018. I spent three good years studying a range of business, science and horse management modules. There was a good balance of classroom based and practical opportunities; the facilities are excellent! I completed the programme in May 2021 and was delighted to be able to graduate in person on Campus when Covid restrictions permitted!  Whilst the graduation event was a smaller event than usual it was a lovely event and it was great to be able to get together again with my former classmates. I’m delighted to now be an Equine graduate from CAFRE.

What was your first job?

After graduating, I worked within a dressage yard, alongside breaking, schooling and producing young horses at my home farm. I am currently employed as a Sales, Marketing and Nutritional Advisor with Bluegrass Horse Feed.  I am based in Eglish, Dungannon. I started working with this company in January 2022. Bluegrass is a locally owned company, and it produces a premium range of horse feed. The range consists of over 25 specialist feeds. Bluegrass Horse Feed works closely with the world’s leading research centre in equine nutrition, Kentucky Equine Research (KER)

What is the best part about your job?

My job is very varied.  I have the opportunity to provide advice on feeding to horse owners over the phone and I can visit yards to discuss equine nutrition and horses’ specific needs with owners.  Bluegrass is a locally owned company.  I enjoy being able to use my equine, science and business knowledge in my current job.

Would you recommend studying at CAFRE?

I really enjoyed my time at CAFRE.  I learnt a lot and met some fantastic people. I would highly recommend study at CAFRE to anyone with an interest in a career in horses.
