CAFRE students studying at
The College of Agriculture Food and Rural Enterprise have been running a student exchange programme with Michigan State University (MSU) since 1996. To date over 60 CAFRE students have spent a semester studying at Michigan and 60 Michigan students have studied at CAFRE. All students (without exception) have thoroughly enjoyed participating in the exchange programme. Students benefit by being able to study at a University that is ranked in the top 100 Universities in the world for teaching and research. The 50,000 students at MSU come, not just from Michigan State but also come from the 50 US states, as well as, from 130 countries across the world. So students get a true international experience.
Where is Michigan State University?
MSU is in the state of Michigan which is in the north east of the USA. The University is located in East Lansing, three miles east of Michigan’s capital in Lansing.
Some Facts about MSU
- MSU was founded in 1855 and was one of the first land-granted institutions in the USA.
- There are over 50,000 students and 11,000 staff at MSU
- The campus is over 5,000 acres.
- There are over 600 student clubs and societies including the famous “Spartans Athletic Club”
Aim of the Student Exchange Programme
The aim of the Exchange Programme is to encourage CAFRE students to study full-time at MSU for one semester as part of their work placement.
Who can apply?
Any student studying a Higher Education Course at CAFRE (part-time or full-time) can apply to the programme.
Four bursaries of approximately £4,000 each are available each year to the successful applicants. The bursary will cover the cost of board and lodgings and contribute towards flights and transfers to MSU.
When to apply
Each year applications will open the last week in November for the following academic year.
Interviews will take place the last week in January and successful students will be offered places on the exchange programme early February. Help will be on hand to guide students on how to apply to MSU, select modules and secure accommodation.
Students will then spend either the autumn or spring semester at MSU.
Cost to Student
Students are expected to cover the cost of the Visa (approximately £100), medical/health travel insurance (approximately £300) and spending money.
