James Irvine

James completed a Multi-skilling course at Greenmount in 2011 and a Level 3 Apprenticeship in Agriculture in 2013.

“I am currently employed on a local farm and farm at home on a part-time basis. It is my ambition to develop our home farm to a position where it will provide me with a sustainable income. The Apprenticeship scheme allowed me to gain the theoretical and practical skills needed to do this. I have expanded our small family farm to over 80 Texel Cross and Belclare ewes and plan to further increase this to some 600 ewes.

It was nice to have my hard work and dedication recognised when I reached the final of the ‘Apprentice of the Year Award’, a national award open to apprentices from any industry.

Doing something you love is great and farming is the most wonderful job in the world. I guess that’s what any apprenticeship scheme should be about; loving doing the job, working hard at it and being successful.”
