I have always loved farming and spent a lot of time when I was younger working on my granddad’s farm. In 2009 I started to develop my own farm at Silverbridge in Newry with a small suckler herd. We now also have a small number of pedigree Limousin cattle which we have developed using embryo transfer technology. Through the multi-skilling programme, I attend Greenmount Campus part-time for a series of intensive weeks training in agriculture completing a Work-based Diploma in Agriculture. At the same time I also attend Southern Regional College, Armagh to learn about welding. I have found this skill to be very useful on the farm and it also provides me with a part-time off-farm income.
I am learning all the time and picking up lots of new ideas from these courses. I’ve learnt about grassland management, dehorning and injecting and about feeding stock. This course is a great way to learn and work at the same time.
