Work placement
Students are required to complete a minimum of 150 hours of work placement over the duration of the course. This is typically undertaken as one day per week following the first semester, though the schedule may vary depending on individual arrangements. Students are responsible for sourcing a suitable work placement provider, subject to college approval. The college offers support to help students identify and secure appropriate placements.
Course Progression
Upon completing second year, you will achieve a Level 3 Advanced Technical Extended Diploma in Land-based Engineering, which is broadly equivalent to three A-Levels. You can then progress to degree level study, apply for a Higher Level Apprenticeship (HLA) or enter the world of work as a Service Technician.
Course Entry Requirements
Normally four GCSE Grade Cs or above at GCSE including Mathematics and English Language, or equivalent qualifications.
Applicants must demonstrate that they have a minimum of 40 hours of experience in the service engineering industry, gained in a workshop environment.
OR
Applicants who have completed a Level 2 Diploma in a relevant course plus Grade Cs at GCSE (or above) in Mathematics and English Language (or equivalent qualifications).
All applicants should have some prior knowledge and experience of a workshop (hand tools and power tools) and of tractors and farm machinery. While there is no tractor driving on this course, prior experience of having operated tractors and machinery is desirable (so that students understand the basic principles of machinery).
Leaving Certificate Applied and Leaving Certificate Foundation Level are not considered as meeting entry requirements for CAFRE programmes. If you require guidance on entry qualifications please email the Key Contact for this course.
Entry requirements will be enhanced if the course is oversubscribed.

"After finishing my GCSEs, I was keen to find a course that focused on practical, hands-on experience. The Land-based Engineering programme delivered exactly that. It wasn’t long before I was in my boiler suit, dismantling machinery and working on various machinery.”
