Level 3 Award in Horse Handling and Behaviour in Equine Assisted Activities

The Level 3 Award in Horse Handling and Behaviour in Equine Assisted Activities is a new blended part time course offered by CAFRE.

The course covers equine behaviour, welfare, horse handling and Health & Safety among other topics. The course will run over six months and comprise of online live lectures (two per month) and one practical day at CAFRE Enniskillen Campus per month. The course will be delivered by CAFRE equine staff with input from a range of local equine assisted practitioners who are currently working in this field.
The course incorporates the accredited qualification Level 3 Award in Handling and Managing Horses in Equine Assisted Learning (Open College Network {OCN} London).

Who is the course for?

The course is aimed at those who are working or intend to work in the area of equine assisted activities.

Equine experience is a prerequisite and participants must be 19 years of age in line with OCN London guidelines. Ideally participants will have British Horse Society (BHS) Stage 2 or equivalent experience.

Course content  

Learning outcomes:

  • Observe and interpret horse behaviour
  • Understand horse welfare
  • Understand horse psychology
  • Reinforce desired behaviour when leading a horse
  • Work with a loose horse in an enclosed space
  • Understand health and safety within equine assisted sessions
  • Understand interactions between horses and people
  • Understand the needs of clients who take part in Equine Assisted Activities

Assessment

The course will involve both written and practical coursework assignments.

Course delivery and duration

  • The course will run over six months
  • Course will start on Monday 22nd August 2022
  • Online live lectures on Monday evenings – two per month
  • Practical session – one Friday per month
  • First practical session – Friday 23rd September 2022
