Level 3 Apprenticeship in the Equine Industry

Completing the Level 3 Apprenticeship in Equine Industry programme will develop your knowledge and skills necessary to complete your British Horse Society (BHS) Stage 3 qualification.

The main assessment component of the Level 3 Apprenticeship in the Equine Industry is the British Horse Society (BHS) Stage 3 qualification, which is an internationally recognised vocational qualification within the equine industry.  The course is completed through the Apprenticeship NI Framework, giving applicants the flexibility to combine work and gaining an equine qualification.  The course requires employment in an equine establishment within Northern Ireland with off the job training at CAFRE Enniskillen Campus (2/3 day blocks periodically throughout the year), and online.

Course Entry Requirements

Level 2 Apprenticeship in Equine and normally a Grade C in English Language and Mathematics or equivalent qualifications.

or

Applicants must have attained the BHS Stage 2 qualification or Pony Club B Test Care, Ride and Lunge and normally a Grade C in English Language and Mathematics or equivalent qualifications.

Students who have not attained a Grade C or above in English Language, Mathematics or ICT at GCSE or equivalent, will complete Essential Skills qualifications in Literacy, Numeracy or ICT as part of the course.

Applicants to Apprenticeship Programmes must be about to take up or already be in paid employment in Northern Ireland, working a minimum of 21 hours a week.

Applicants must also demonstrate that they have a minimum of 40 hours of experience in the equine industry, before starting the course.

Leaving Certificate Applied and Leaving Certificate Foundation Level are not considered as meeting entry requirements for CAFRE programmes. If you require guidance on entry qualifications please email the Key Contact for this course.

  • Horse anatomy and physiology
  • Improve a horse’s fitness
  • Lunge a horse
  • Manage a turnout area
  • Manage the health of a horse
  • Nutritional requirements of a horse
  • Understand how lungeing contributes to a horse’s training
  • Understand undesirable horse behaviour
  • Use of bits
Career opportunities

This course provides training and an industry recognised qualification for students working in a diverse range of roles within the industry including competition grooms, riding centre employees and racing yard grooms and riders.
