Level 3 Apprenticeship in the Equine Industry
Completing the Level 3 Apprenticeship in Equine Industry programme will develop your knowledge and skills necessary to complete your British Horse Society (BHS) Stage 3 qualification.
This course provides training and an industry recognised qualification for students working in a diverse range of roles within the industry including horse grooms, riding centre employees and racing yard grooms and riders.
The NI Government framework which sets out the standards and criteria you must meet to complete the Apprenticeship programme and receive your Apprenticeship Certificate for Level 3 in Equine Industry. This is the only Level 3 training in this skill acceptable for ApprenticeshipsNI funding.

- Assess a horse’s conformation
- Equipment for flatwork and jumping
- Horse anatomy and physiology
- Improve a horse’s fitness
- Lunge a horse
- Manage a turnout area
- Manage the health of a horse
- Nutritional requirements of a horse
- Understand how lungeing contributes to a horse’s training
- Understand undesirable horse behaviour
- Use of bits
Course Entry Requirements
Level 2 Apprenticeship in Equine and normally a Grade C in English Language, Mathematics and ICT or equivalent qualifications.

Applicants must have attained the BHS Stage 2 qualification and normally a Grade C in English Language and Mathematics or equivalent qualifications.
Students who have not attained a Grade D or above in English Language, Mathematics or ICT at GCSE or equivalent, will complete Essential Skills qualifications in Literacy, Numeracy or ICT as part of the course.
Apprentices must be aged 16-24 years and about to take up or already be in paid employment in Northern Ireland. They must be working a minimum of 21 hours a week.
Applicants must also demonstrate that they have a minimum of 40 hours of experience in the equine industry which can be acquired prior to leaving school.
