Level 2 in Equine Care with Forgework

Farriery is the shoeing of horses and similar animals. A farrier is a skilled craftsperson who is able to make shoes for all types of horses’ feet according to the needs and welfare of the animal. This course provides the knowledge and skills required to progress to a farriery apprenticeship. This programme at CAFRE Enniskillen Campus includes both a Level 2 Technical Certificate in Horse Care and a Level 2 Certificate in Forgework. The course is full-time and runs for one academic year.

  • City and Guilds Level 2 Certificate in Forgework

Course Entry Requirements

Normally two Grade Cs or three Grade Ds at GCSE or equivalent, including English Language and Mathematics.

Students who have not attained a Grade C in English and Mathematics at GCSE or equivalent have to complete Essential Skills in Literacy and Numeracy which will need to be arranged to take place in the evening.

Irish Leaving Certificate applications: Ordinary Level – Two Grade 4s or Three Grade 5s including English and Mathematics. Leaving Certificate Applied and Leaving Certificate Foundation Level are not considered as meeting entry requirements for CAFRE programmes. Applicants must also demonstrate that they have a minimum of 40 hours of experience in the equine industry, which can be acquired prior to leaving school.

Course content

  • Forgework
  • Equine health and welfare
  • Feeding and watering
  • Health and safety
  • Horse handling and grooming
  • Horse tack and equipment
  • Introduction to lunging horses
  • Working in the equine industry
  • Riding and exercising horses OR Assisting with the care of competition horses and Principles of Horse Behaviour

In addition to what is included on the equipment list students will also need the following:

  • Steel toe capped boots
  • Flame retardant overalls
  • Protective glasses
  • Ear defenders

Work placement

A minimum of five-weeks approved work placement is an integral part of this course. Students completing the Forgework as part of their programme are encouraged to find work with an approved farrier or in an approved work experience equine establishment to improve their horse care skills.

Course Progression

This course may provide an opportunity for students to progress onto an Apprenticeship in Farriery, ultimately sitting the Diploma of the Worshipful Company of Farriers and becoming a registered member or to progress to study for the Level 3 Advanced Technical Extended Diploma in Horse Management. Students are well positioned to find employment in a diverse range of sectors within the equine industry including: racing, show jumping, eventing, dressage and showing, riding schools, livery yards and studs.
