Farriery Upskilling Programme
The Farriery Upskilling Programme at Enniskillen Campus is for working farriers, to allow them to gain The Worshipful Company of Farriers Diploma (DipWCF), which is taught part-time. The course is designed to produce qualified professional farriers who are competent in all aspects of hoof care including the selection fit and application of horse shoes. The course is delivered just over two years and students attend tutorials (forge work and classroom) two days a month.
Course content
Main areas of study are:
- Equine anatomy
- Equine conformation
- Equine dynamics and movement
- Equine physiology
- Forging skills
- Injuries and ailments affecting the foot/limb
- Production and fit of horse shoes
Course Progression
Through the course farriers have the opportunity to gain a recognised qualification and from there they can apply to the Farriers Registration Council to become registered.
Course Entry Requirements
Applicants must have written confirmation, from at least two independent sources, one of which must be a farrier, confirming that they have been fully employed as a registered or unregistered farrier for at least two years.
This course will be offered subject to sufficient demand.
As part of the final assessment farriers must make and apply shoes, take a theory exam, complete an oral assessment and produce a portfolio of handmade shoes.
