On the 14th of April this study tour took a group of mushroom growers to the Netherlands and Belgium to learn about innovative management practices in mushroom production. A particular focus of the trip was on moving Dutch shelving technology which facilitates easier harvesting of mushrooms.
The tour was lead by CAFRE adviser Kieran Lavelle and included visits to several progressive mushroom farms to see new growing and harvesting technologies. The farm visits were co-ordinated with the assistance of Brendan Burns, Sylvan International who is familiar with mushroom growing protocols on Northern Ireland farms. Participants saw a range of Dutch shelving options in operation across the farms visited with the aim of increasing harvesting efficiency.
