Proficiency in Beekeeping

Level 3 Proficiency in Beekeeping is an Open College Network Northern Ireland (OCN NI) endorsed course developed by the Ulster Beekeepers’ Association (UBKA) in conjunction with OCN NI and CAFRE (College Agriculture, Food & Rural Enterprise). This course builds upon the knowledge and skills gained from the Level 1 Introduction to Beekeeping course.

The course consists of 10 Units.  The content of the first 9 Units will be delivered in the classroom over 2 years in 15 x 2-hour sessions each year.  Unit 10, apiary skills, will be ongoing and developed in the apiary setting.

Course content

During 2025-2026 the first three topics will be taught:

  • External Anatomy and Internal Biology of the Honeybee
  • Natural History of the Honeybee
  • Diseases, Parasites, Pests and Risks
  • Forage, Plants and Pollination
  • Nectar and Honey
  • Honeybee Products and their Preparation for Show and for Sale
  • Apiary Management and Honeybee Husbandry
  • Practical Management of the Apiary
Entry Requirement

Successful completion of Level 1 Introduction to Beekeeping, or the UBKA Preliminary examination or FIBKA Preliminary examination (prior to 2020).

Cost

£250 for each year, which covers a registration fee, assessment fees and tuition but excludes the Unit 10 Practical Assessment fee.

Location

The course will be delivered in Antrim, Belfast, Donegal and Enniskillen.
