Proficiency in Beekeeping

‘Proficiency in Beekeeping’ is an Open College Network Northern Ireland (OCN NI) Level 3 endorsed course developed by the Ulster Beekeepers’ Association (UBKA) Education and Assessment Team in conjunction with OCN NI and CAFRE personnel. It builds upon the knowledge gained from any successfully completed introductory beekeeping course.

It consists of 10 units. The content of the first 9 to be delivered in the classroom over 2 years as 15 x 2 hour sessions each year, followed by Unit 10 apiary skills, which will be developed and assessed in apiary settings.  Assessment of Units 1 to 9 will be by continuous assessment through the completion of student workbooks.  All units must be completed to a satisfactory standard to achieve the Level 3 endorsed award.  UBKA Tutors will deliver the 2 year course in a range of locations

  • External Anatomy and Internal Biology of Honeybees
  • Natural History of the Honeybee
  • Diseases
  • Pests and Pathogens of the Honeybee
  • Nectar and Honey
  • Forage Plants and Pollination
  • Hive Products for Show and for Sale
  • Apiary and Honeybee Management.

The course is two years in duration.  The cost is £200 per year (i.e. £400 for both years).  At the beginning of each year, the student will be required to pay £200 upon enrolment for that particular year.  This sum covers registration, assessment fees and tuition but excludes the Unit 10 Practical Assessment fee.
