Level 3 Award in Business Management for the Environment and Land-based Sector – Horticulture

The Level 3 Award in Business Management for the Environment and Land-based Sector is awarded through City & Guilds and offers an excellent opportunity to gain valuable knowledge in equine business management whilst also gaining an accredited qualification. This comprehensive course will run over twelve weeks (ten weeks teaching with two study weeks) and will be delivered both in-person and via online training. 

Who is the course for?

This course is designed for anyone currently involved in the operation or management of a horticulture business or those wishing to gain knowledge in this area. The course is an ideal starting point to gain a broad range of knowledge in business and would particularly suit horticulture business owners, area managers, freelance horticulture professionals, aspiring managers or supervisors and professionals transitioning into the horticulture sector.

  • Commences Wednesday 4 February, 2026
  • Duration 12 weeks
  • Combination of in-person sessions at Greenmount Campus or Enniskillen Campus and online learning via MS Teams
  • In person sessions are for full days and the online sessions are part days.

The content is designed with land-based industries in mind, making it highly relevant to the operational and management challenges faced in the horticulture sector.

  • Business Structure and Organisation

Understand the different types of business ownership and how businesses are structured in the land-based and horticulture industries.

  • Business Planning

Learn how to develop a business plan, set objectives, and understand the importance of strategic planning for business success.

  • Marketing and Customer Service

Gain knowledge of marketing principles, promotion methods, and how to provide high quality customer service tailored to your client base.

  • Finance and Budgeting

Explore basic financial principles including income and expenditure, budgeting, profit and loss, and financial planning for sustainable business operations.

  • Legislation and Compliance

Become familiar with legal obligations relevant to horticulture or land-based businesses, including health and safety, employment law, and business regulations.

  • Sustainability and Resource Management

Understand how to manage natural and physical resources responsibly, and how sustainability impacts business decisions in the horticulture sector.

Course assessment

The Level 3 Award in Business Management for the Environment and Land-based Sector is awarded through City & Guilds with assessment comprising of a range of written assignments over the 12-week period.

Course Entry Requirements

There are no formal entry requirements for the qualification. Ideally, those who apply for the course would have some prior industry experience and a suitable level of literacy and numeracy to allow them to complete the written assessments which are part of the qualification.
