Level 2 Certificate in the Principles of Horse Care
The Level 2 Certificate in the Principles of Horse Care is an accredited Level 2 qualification. The course will be delivered via blended learning using online lectures, video meetings and an exam at Greenmount Campus, Antrim. The course will run on a Tuesday evening via video call from 7-9pm, for nine weeks and will commence Tuesday 24th September 2024.
Who is the course for?
The course is aimed at participants wanting to gain a recognised qualification in horse care without having to attend college on a full-time basis, for example private owners, small scale breeders, leisure riders and non-equine veterinary nurses are all potential participants. Any level of equine experience is permitted. Learners must be 16 years of age to sit the exam.
Course content
The qualification is composed of six units and during the qualification you will complete the following learning outcomes:
- Understand the principles of stable routines, including mucking out, grooming, selecting bedding and caring for a horse after exercise, and any associated health and safety procedures
- Understand the principles of basic horse health and welfare, including recognising signs of good health and ill health in a horse
- Understand the principles of watering and feeding horses, covering a range of foodstuffs
- Understand the principles of care and fitting of saddlery and horse clothing, and the consequences of using poor fitting equipment
- Understand the principles of employment rights and responsibilities in the land based industries
- Understand the principles of health and safety in the horse industry
Assessment
Assessment is via a multiple choice test at the end of the course which will take place at Greenmount Campus, Antrim or Enniskillen Campus.
