Basics in Equine Parasite Management

CAFRE will be delivering the online course Basics in Equine Parasite Management, starting on Monday 24th February 2025. The course will be delivered by CAFRE Equine Lecturer, Ashley Robinson MSc SQP. This prerecorded, completely online course will be available over a two-week period commencing on 24th February 2025. There will also be online discussion groups, quizzes and additional reading sources to assist learning. Participants can access the lectures at a time and place which suits them during the scheduled period.

Who is the course for?

This course will be of benefit to anyone involved in the management of horses and will provide participants with evidence-based knowledge of equine parasites management. Outlining common equine parasites and their lifecycles and discussing management practices for minimising parasite infection including grassland management, monitoring tools and recent guidance on a risk assessment based approach to parasite control.

 

Course content

This course will cover the following topics with the purpose of providing participants with an understanding of equine parasites and their lifecycles, an understanding of the impacts of grassland management on parasite levels, up to date information on testing practices and interpretation of results and an understanding of the concerns over anthelmintic resistance to ensure cost efficiency and equine health and welfare.

  • Common parasites and seasonal responses
  • Minimising parasite infection risks
  • Overview of updated equine parasite guidelines

 

Assessment

Knowledge will be assessed using online tests as participants work through the presentations.

Course fee – This course is free but participants must pre-register.
