Salary: £24,113 per annum (pro rata)
Hours of Work: 22.5 hours per week
Holidays: 25 days per annum plus 11 customary days (pro rata)
Duration: 6 months fixed term with the possibility of extension (subject to funding)

Northern Allotments are seeking a Horticultural Lead – Northern Allotments to lead on all aspects of delivery relating to the programme as per the organisational objectives.  This will include supporting community groups (primarily based in the Northern Trust area) to create new community gardens/allotments, maintain existing gardens/allotments and increase engagement in those and other green spaces.  Supporting groups and individuals to make the most of their green spaces, developing and delivering training and engagement sessions ranging from how to begin to grow, harvest and cook their own produce to developing their understanding and appreciation of biodiversity.

The successful candidate will have excellent organisational abilities and attention to detail, as well as first-rate communication skills.  An outgoing, professional manner is a must and the ability to work to deadlines.  With the propensity for thinking ahead, and the ability to rise to the challenge of new or unexpected circumstances.  A facility to think creatively and come up with innovative solutions is highly desirable.  Self-motivated and have a commitment to self-development with a strong personal commitment to the aims and objectives of Groundwork Northern Ireland.

The ideal candidate will meet the following essential criteria:
  • Have a minimum of two years’ experience of working in a horticultural environment
  • Experience of delivering horticultural training/workshops to a wide variety of groups and abilities
  • Experience of delivering projects on time, within budget and in accordance with funder requirements
  • Be fully proficient at using IT systems, with a good working knowledge of Microsoft Windows and Office packages
  • Have a full driving licence and access to a car for official business
Desirable criteria:
  • Relevant qualification in a horticultural or agricultural subject
  • Experience of managing multiple projects
  • Experience of managing trainees / volunteers and practical work on site
