National Farming Union (NFU) are hiring a Graduate for Agricultural Policy. The NFU is the most successful representation body for agriculture and horticulture in England and Wales and represent more than 45,000 farming and growing businesses. They strive to protect and promote British farm life and give their members a voice now and in the future.

About the role

The NFU Graduate for Agricultural Policy will aid the development of agricultural and food policy work on specific projects across NFU offices in England, Wales and potentially Brussels. The successful candidate will work 35 hours per week and earn an annual salary of £25,000. The graduate scheme will begin September 2025.

Responsibilities
  • Work at NFU HQ and NFU regional offices, alongside industry experts to deliver challenging projects across the NFU. These projects could range from cross-sector topics such as environment to food safety, animal welfare to tenancies, trade and business, or through a particular sector commodity such as arable, dairy, horticulture etc.
  • Liaison with NFU members (farmers and growers) including senior elected officeholders and board members as part of the project
  • Develop your own networks, make presentations and produce clear and succinct reports for a variety of audiences.
  • To be an NFU Inclusion Champion, taking part in inclusion activities across the organisation.
  • This role profile will develop to meet the needs of the NFU.
Essential skills
  • Educated to a degree level, typically a 2:1 or above, or equivalent, with a proven passion for the agricultural industry.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and authentic approach.
  • Positive, can-do attitude.
  • Quick learner with the ability to adapt to changing priorities.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Good grammatical and numerical skills.
  • Team player.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office package (Word, Excel, Outlook)
  • Relishes meeting new people and tackling new situations.
  • Confident presenting to a variety of audiences.
  • Self-motivated.
  • Ability to produce work quickly under pressure to a consistently high standard.
  • The ability to interpret complex issues and provide a simple summary.
  • Willingness to travel and attend events as necessary as part of the placement.
  • Ability to work flexibly or out of hours when required.
  • Must be willing to live within accessible travel from placement location.
  • Full current driving licence
Desirable Skills
  • Intermediate level user in Excel.
  • Competent database skills.
  • Knowledge of the food and farming industry.
  • Experience of working in PR or other communications field.
  • Experience of:
    • Collating statistics, analysing data and producing reports.
    • Delivering projects
    • Working as part of a cross-departmental team.
    • Working with a range of individuals from varying backgrounds.
