David Henderson – CAFRE Alumni

David Henderson, from Strabane completed the Level 3 Advanced Technical Extended Diploma in Land Based Engineering at CAFRE, Greenmount Campus in June 2021

Why did you decide to study at CAFRE?

When looking for a course following completion of my GCSEs, I wanted one that would offer hands on training. The Land-based Engineering course certainly offers that. Before I knew it, I had my boiler suit on and I was taking machines apart and welding. I have always had an interest in mechanical work and engineering from an early age, I knew the Land-based Engineering course would be a great start to my career.

What course did you study at CAFRE and how has it influenced your career?

I completed the Level 3 Advanced Technical Extended Diploma in Land Based Engineering at Greenmount Campus. This is a two year course and includes a period of work placement as part of the programme too. I thoroughly enjoyed my time at Greenmount Campus. The course is mainly taught in the Machinery and Buildings Centre, which is available to all engineering students for their practical classes. The modern equipment available ensures the best possible learning experience enabling me to ‘learn by doing’. This experience was invaluable as I was able to put my theory into practice when I commenced my job as an agricultural service engineer.

What is your current job and responsibilities?

I am currently employed at Sayers Machinery Services, Strabane as an agricultural service engineer. No day or week is ever the same, given the nature of the role. My main responsibilities include working and fixing tractors and other agricultural machinery. I could be tasked to do a range of different things on a range or agricultural machinery such as, tractors, trailers, silage harvesters, telehandlers and much more. Studying the Land Based Engineering course at Greenmount gave me a really good foundation and understanding of the industry which I now work in.

Have you undertaken further training since leaving CAFRE?

I am currently undertaking a Level 3 in Diploma in Work-based Agriculture at CAFRE. This is a two year course and is delivered over two years. The course gives me the flexibility to combine work and education to gain an additional qualification. It is giving me the opportunity to grow my knowledge of agriculture, helping me to improve my own farm. I now understand the rationale behind the tasks that need completed.

What advice would you give a school leaver considering study at CAFRE?

I would highly recommend the Land-based Engineering course at Greenmount Campus to anyone with a practical ability and an interest in mechanical work combined with agricultural and land-based machinery. It will equip you with the necessary employability skills and prepare you for a career in a range of machinery and engineering related jobs. If you’re willing to work hard, gain a valuable qualification and also gain experience of living away from home, CAFRE is a great place to learn, study and to meet new people. I have made many lifelong friends on the Land-based engineering course and the other courses CAFRE have to offer.

What advice would you give a new graduate? Seize every opportunity. There is an abundance of career opportunities out there. Also, look at the bigger picture. Having a good balance of practical experience is extremely helpful and remember it is never too late to start learning.
