Jessica Boyd – CAFRE Alumni

CAFRE

Hi, my name is Jessica Boyd, I’m 23 years old and for the past four years I was employed as a beautician.  It was during those years, that I went to a weekly floral art class and found my passion for floristry – a discipline that gave me a new way of expressing of my creativity. I always knew if I wanted to change career, it would definitely be to floristry. Then lockdown happened. I was made redundant and I thought this was the golden opportunity to do the Level 2 Floristry course at CAFRE.

Being a student at CAFRE has been such a joy. Coming from a working perspective, going back into education has been a privilege. Our tutors have been brilliant, really going above and beyond what is expected to help us throughout the course with both hands on practical and remote delivery, both of which has been especially challenging during Covid-19. They have shown so much support, understanding and encouragement to the class in these uncertain times and the impact is clear when we look back and see the rapid progress we all have made.

As part of our course we undertake work placement one day a week. It’s amazing; the amount of skills that are put into use, the build-up of knowledge and confidence, and the insight I am getting into the industry. The florist I’m working with was a past CAFRE student and has run her own business for the past three years. She has been such an inspiration and help to me and completely understands what it’s like when you are starting out.

There are so many exciting and varied opportunities. I hope to progress on to Level 3 Floristry next year and get a job in a florist starting as a junior and building up my experience in the industry and become a professional florist.
