CAFRE Enniskillen Launches New Level 2 Certificate in Forgework

May 23, 2025

CAFRE’s Enniskillen Campus is excited to announce the launch of the Level 2 Certificate in Forgework in response to growing demand from the equine and rural industries. Starting in September 2025, this City & Guilds-accredited course offers aspiring farriers, blacksmiths, and craft enthusiasts a valuable opportunity to develop traditional forgework skills in a modern educational environment.

This practical hands-on course can be completed in two flexible formats: as a part-time option with one day per week on campus throughout the academic year, or as a full-time option studied alongside the Level 2 Technical Certificate in Equine Care. This flexibility ensures the programme is accessible to school leavers, mature students and career changers.

Delivered by experienced tutors in CAFRE’s fully equipped on-site forge, the qualification covers a broad range of foundational skills including the operation of forge hearths, metalworking techniques, and safe and effective use of blacksmithing tools. Whether learners are aiming to pursue further training in blacksmithing, farriery, or forgework more broadly, this course provides a strong platform for progression.

This marks the return of forgework training at CAFRE, which was last offered in 2015. The reintroduction of this qualification reflects CAFRE’s ongoing commitment to providing industry-relevant training that meets the evolving needs of the equine and rural sectors.

There are no specific prior qualifications required for the Forgework Certificate. However, applicants who wish to study it alongside the Level 2 Technical Certificate in Equine Care must meet the entry requirements for that programme.
