April 16, 2025

The College of Agriculture, Food and Rural Enterprise’s (CAFRE) Food Technology team deliver courses in line with food industry needs. One course, Root Cause Analysis (RCA), offers a systematic approach to the identification of the underlying cause of a problem. By focusing on the source, businesses can effectively address issues and prevent recurrence.

Generally, RCA is used to investigate incidents, eliminate defects, and enhance systems or processes. The course provides participants with the knowledge, skills and tools to enable them to confront a problem and ascertain what happened, how and why.

Root Cause Analysis (RCA) can help food businesses protect the consumer from food safety issues. Along with how to avoid costs associated with food recalls and withdrawals. Overall, RCA training can help protect food businesses reputation and help them to save money by focusing resources.

Ryan McConnell, a Technical Services Manager at Kilkeel Seafoods Ltd who attended the programme in March 2025, shares his experience of the programme: “The Root Cause Analysis course was a great opportunity to explore methods used to get to the source of a problem. The course attracted staff from a range of other companies. Being part of group training aided the learning process, through discussion and the sharing of experiences”.
