Young Horse Handling at CAFRE Enniskillen Campus

Students at CAFRE Enniskillen Campus are studying a Level 3 Advanced Technical Extended Diploma in Equine Management. In their second year, they complete the unit titled ‘The Introduction to the Principles of Young Horse Handling, Training, and Backing.’ The unit provides students with a hands-on opportunity to prepare young horses for their ridden careers. Lessons are taught at our dedicated Breeding Unit, working with our homebred youngstock. This module bridges theoretical knowledge with invaluable hands-on experience.

The module is designed to guide students through the entire process of breaking and backing. It covers everything from introducing tack and groundwork to the critical steps of backing and riding away. By handling horses bred on-site, students gain a deeper understanding of the individuality of young horses. They also learn about the importance of tailored training approaches that prioritise welfare and gradual progression.

This module was reintroduced in response to direct feedback from the equine industry, which highlighted the demand for graduates with practical skills and real-world experience in this area. It ensures students not only understand the principles of young horse training but also leave with the confidence and competence to apply them in professional settings.

By combining practical application with industry insights, this module equips students with a strong foundation for careers in the training of young horses, setting them apart in an increasingly competitive field.
