Careers Day at CAFRE Enniskillen Campus

January 27, 2022

The diverse range of careers available in the equine industry were showcased at the College of Agriculture, Food and Rural Enterprise’s (CAFRE) Equine Careers Day.

This annual event, delivered on-line, provided a unique opportunity for national and international equine businesses to join together to highlight the vast range of careers students can look forward to after they graduate.

The event had two parts. During the first session students attended small break-out groups for informal networking opportunities. Seamus McAlinney, Head of Equine at CAFRE commented, “We had an incredible range of representatives from the equine industry available to meet our students, including Rahinston Stud, Smith Brothers Eventing (Ballymac Stud) and the Household Cavalry. CAFRE colleagues and I extend our thanks to each business for their continued support to our students”.

In the second part, Leo Powell, Editor of the Irish Field and Co-author of Memoirs of an Irish Auction House, chaired a panel discussion where guests shared experiences and career journeys with the students.

Panel guests included CAFRE graduates Patrick Hester and Emma McCabe. Patrick is now a freelance Equestrian Coach/Trainer based in Norway and Emma is currently based at Kia Ora Stud in Australia.

Gerry Duffy, Godolphin, Kentucky USA and Eileen Phethean, Chief Operating Officer for Kentucky Equine Research (KER) USA alongside Aaron McCusker, Meadows Equestrian Centre, Lurgan joined the panel and they too inspired the students by sharing their career journeys.

Manon Varenne, Lyon (FRA), BSc (Hons) Degree in Equine Management student, thanked the panellists saying “I would like express our thanks on behalf of the student body, to the industry representatives for taking the time to give us an overview of the job opportunities, skills and personal qualities required by those wishing to enter the equine industry. This will be a considerable help to us all as we plan our future careers.”
