CAFRE – I’m going to miss you!

May 15, 2021

Final year Honours Degree students across the College of Agriculture, Food and Rural Enterprise (CAFRE) are getting ready to embark on a new chapter in their careers as May traditionally marks the end of their programmes of study.

Rachael Addy, a final year student on the BSc (Hons) Degree in Equine Management course at Enniskillen Campus is looking forward to establishing a new career in the equine sector.

“I developed an interest in horses from an early age. Despite not growing up around horses I was focused on working with them. After spending a few years working in the industry, I decided to research courses that would open up equine career opportunities for me. CAFRE was the obvious choice”, commented Rachael.

The Ulster University Honours Degree in Equine Management offers a diverse range of modules alongside a combination of both academic and practical work. The course can be completed over three years or four, with one year spent on work placement in an equine business.

“I really enjoyed the combination of practical teaching in our modules, it made the subjects more engaging. Our lecturers made us feel really comfortable even when learning something totally new and encouraged lots of in-class discussions,” remarked Rachael.

“It would be hard to find another specialist college or university offering equine courses which could boast the same industry support as CAFRE receives. The college has excellent links with businesses and students benefits from them. As a student we had the chance to apply to the established generous bursary programme. We were introduced to employers at careers fairs and supported through work placements.”

“I’ve learnt so much in my time at CAFRE. The work has been challenging and pushed me outside of my comfort zone. I feel more confident in my abilities and have developed lots of new skills. As Enniskillen Campus specialises in equine teaching all the students on campus have similar interests – whether that’s in horse racing, breeding or equitation. We are a close-knit family. I’ve made friends for life during my time at CAFRE and wouldn’t hesitate to recommend the college to anyone considering a career in the equine industry,” concluded Rachael.

CAFRE is currently accepting applications through UCAS Extra for places on Honours Degree and Foundation Degree courses starting this September and a limited number of places may be available through UCAS Clearing in August.
