Great turnout at CAFRE Equine Conference

 

The CAFRE Equine Performance and Training conference took place on Wednesday 1st March at Greenmount Campus , Antrim. The conference was attended by over 100 industry professionals including riders, coaches, breeders, trainers and vets as well as a group of equine students from Chichester College in England.

The conference opened with Dr Lisa Katz from University College Dublin, Veterinary School, presenting an enthusiastic scientific view of how the horse adapts to training as well as the technology which can be used to gather this information. Fran James from Newmarket Equine Hospital discussed the topic of injuries in performance horses and used some dissected equine limbs to point out the structures which can be prone to damage. Racehorse trainer Andy Oliver, then spoke about the management of racehorses and the gallops that he uses for different horses as part of the fittening process. To close the conference, Irish Olympian Jonty Evans then shared his views on managing and conditioning Event horses including exercises that he uses for horses at various stages of their career.
