Level 2 Diploma in Horse Care Parents Day at Enniskillen Campus
Parents and guardians of Level 2 Diploma in Horse Care students were recently invited to visit Enniskillen Campus. The aim of this event was for parents and guardians to be updated on what the students have been learning and how they are progressing on their course. Enniskillen Campus management and staff strongly believe that a partnership between staff, students, parents/guardians, family and friends is most likely to achieve the best performance from the student.
The day started with the students giving a presentation on the modules which they undertake as part of the course. The year manager for the group, Kathryn Hazlett then spoke briefly to the parents about the impending 5 week work placement which the students were preparing to go on. This then led us on to the practical session of the day. First visit of the day was to the racing yard where parents/ guardians were able to see the students grooming, tacking up for racing, mucking out and cleaning tack. The highlight of the day was the painted horse. Veterinary Lecturer, Hilary Glasgow andthe students had painted one of the racehorses, Bluefire to show the different muscles. Two of the students, Abigail Reilly and Carla Cosgrove, then demonstrated their knowledge by naming these muscles – and this is no easy task! Phillipa Lyness and Nicole Bannon then demonstrated their horse handling skills by parading two of the horses around the Campus parade ring. Conor Feeney (a Pre-farrier student) then completed the tour by showing the parents and guardians the forge and some of the pieces in which he has been working on in preparation for his upcoming forgework exam.
The day ended by heading back up to the main Campus building where the parents/ guardians had the opportunity to chat to the course manager, Sharon McLaren and year manager, Kathryn Hazlett regarding the student’s progress. The day was thoroughly enjoyed by all.
