Valerie wins Greenmount heat of Young Horticulturalist Competition
19 March 2009 The Northern Ireland heat of the Young Horticulturist of the Year competition was held recently at Greenmount Campus (CAFRE). Over 60 horticulture students battled it out for first prize and the chance to represent N. Ireland in the Irish final. The competition is organised by the Institute of Horticulture. After fifty taxing questions, the overall winner was Valerie Orr from Ballygowan (Co. Down), who is a second year Foundation Degree student. The runner-up was John Savage from Belleeks (Newtownhamilton, Co Armagh), who is a part-time Foundation Degree student. Claire Scott from Letterkenny (Co. Donegal) who is studying on the National Diploma course was awarded third place. The prize for the highest scoring mature entrant went to Martin Jameson from Ardboe (Dungannon, Co Tyrone). The prizes were presented by Mrs Claire Woods, Senior Lecturer in Horticulture, and a member of the Irish Branch of the Institute of Horticulture.
