Food students joined by Minister at Loughry
21 September 2010 Minister Michelle Gildernew MP, MLA has welcomed the new intake of food students to Loughry Campus, College of Agriculture, Food and Rural Enterprise (CAFRE) at the start of the 2010/11 academic year. Greeting the new students, the Minister congratulated them on their career choice. She said: “It is vital to the continued success of our most important industry that young people gain qualifications valued by employers in the food sector.” She also confirmed an increased number of student enrolments on agriculture and food courses offered at CAFRE this academic year. The Minister said “I am very encouraged by the increased level of enrolments on CAFRE’s agri-food courses this year. This shows the important role CAFRE has in the agri-food industry and its strong academic reputation amongst school leavers. “With the economy still recovering from the recent downturn the agri-food industry has performed relatively well, with food and drink processing competing strongly in challenging conditions. I have emphasised throughout the recent recession the opportunities available in the local food sector and am very glad to see that young people can appreciate the careers potential it offers In conclusion the Minister said: “The news that enrolment levels on food courses at Loughry are at their highest for many years provides a vote of confidence in our industry. In due course these young people will provide a new generation of food graduates to help drive our industry forward. “Their knowledge and skills will help maintain and improve our international reputation for safe, healthy, high quality and innovative foods. I wish all these young people well as they embark on a new and exciting stage in their career.”
