Summer farm welding courses
28 June 2010

Are you interested in improving your farm welding skills? If so, you should give some thought to attending the Basic Farm Welding course at CAFRE.

The courses, which will be based in Greenmount Campus, will start in mid July 2010 and will run during the day. The course costs £64 per person and this covers all the materials used and any assessment costs. The topics covered in the course include:

  • Systems used for welding, cutting and heating
  • Safety and personal protective clothing
  • Bead Welds
  • MMA and MIG welding
  • Butt, Single Vee and fillet joints

William and John Dalton from Randalstown, completed the course in early 2010 and thought it was of great help to them on their farm. John commented:

“Before I started the course I couldn’t weld now I can do the small welding jobs about the farm. Our instructor was very patient and helpful which was a great help”. William added, “We don’t have to wait days for a welder to come and fix machinery which means there is less down time”.

William and John hope to progress on to the Advanced Farm Welding course in the autumn where they will cover skills such as MIG corner joints, oxyacetylene welding, vertical and overhead welds and the fabrication of a piece of agricultural equipment.

If your work is of sufficient standard in the Basic Farm Welding course you will be awarded a certificate at NVQ level 2 by the Open College Network for Northern Ireland
