Students visit Meadowview Rehabilitation yard
19 January 2012 Students on the BTEC Level 3 Diploma in Equine Management at CAFRE’s Enniskillen Campus study Horse Rehabilitation and Therapy as an option in their first year. This part of their course gives them a better understanding of rehabilitation programmes used when a horse suffers an injury. To broaden the students’ experience of equine rehabilitation they recently visited Meadowview Rehabilitation Yard in Keady, Co Armagh. The owner of the yard, Mr. Paddy Fagan, spoke to the students about his facilities which consisted of an ECB equine spa, horse walker, arena and 14 stables. He explained the process used in order to improve the horse’s injury and how hydrotherapy can speed up healing and build strength in horses suffering from a wide variety of ailments ranging from tendonitis to sore shins. The equine spa is an important part of the process and was the highlight of the trip for the students who thoroughly enjoyed watching as a horse went in the spa for its daily treatment. Mr Fagan discussed the uses of the spa, how it operates and the associated costs of owning one. He then showed the students a number of horses with different injuries and explained the rehabilitation programme that he would use in conjunction with the equine spa to further facilitate the healing process. The students thoroughly enjoyed the trip and benefited from Mr Fagan’s knowledge and experience regarding his business and the rehabilitation of horses.
