Students from the Greenmount Campus of the College of Agriculture, Food and Rural Enterprise recently received £1,000 bursaries from the following organisations and companies: - AI Services Ltd., David Colegrave Foundation, Dunbia (Dungannon), John Thompson and Sons Ltd., Northern Bank, Thomas Henry Foundation, Tyrone Farming Society, Ulster Farmers’ Union and the Ulster Grassland Society.

As expected, there was very high competition for these bursaries from students on BSc Agricultural Technology, HND Agriculture and Foundation Degrees in Horticulture and Rural and Countryside Management courses.

Presentation of Awards

Speaking at a short presentation ceremony, Mr John Fay, CAFRE Director, thanked the industry representatives for their generosity and willingness to support young people entering higher education within the sector.

In response, the bursary sponsors praised the high quality of the students’ work and congratulated them on their efforts. Jonathan McCaughey, John Thompson and Sons Ltd, commented, “This bursary scheme is a way in which businesses can make a small but important contribution to ensuring the continued supply of professional managers to the industry. We are delighted to be able to help them and wish them every success in their programmes.”

Student Appreciation

Andrew Wright, a student on the BSc Agricultural Technology programme and recipient of the bursary from the Ulster Grassland Society, thanked the sponsors for their support. “We are very grateful to these companies for giving us this fantastic start at Greenmount. It is most encouraging that industry is willing to invest in young people embarking on a career in the land-based sector.”
