Greenmount students invited to launch of scholarships worth £1,000 each
02 August 2010 Students commencing First Year Higher Education at Greenmount are being invited to compete for a number of scholarships. This year there are 11 bursaries on offer, each to the value £1,000. Students will be eligible if they are commencing a course in BSc Agricultural Technology, or Higher National Diploma in Agriculture or a Foundation Degree (in either Horticulture or Rural and Countryside Management). They can learn how to compete for the bursaries at Greenmount on Wednesday 18 August at 12.30 pm when the leading industry providers will be present to launch the competition for the 2010-11 academic year. Dunbia, which has facilities in Dungannon and Ballymena, is one of many organisations within the agri-food sector who provide substantial bursaries for students studying at CAFRE. In addition Dunbia also facilitates excellent work placement opportunities for students. Heather Hall, Coleraine, is studying on the BSc Agricultural Technology degree course offered in partnership between CAFRE and Queen’s University Belfast. She has just completed two years of the course at Greenmount Campus and is currently on work experience with Dunbia. At the start of her programme in 2008, Heather received a bursary from Dunbia which helped finance her studies at Greenmount. She comments, “This award provided a first class opportunity for me to link directly with industry. During my work placement with Dunbia I am presently working on a project studying pig welfare from the farm to the processing factory. I am also producing advisory leaflets for producers.” Meanwhile, Philip Allister from a beef farm in Monaghan, received a bursary from Dunbia in 2009. He has just finished first year of the Higher National Diploma in Agriculture and is now also on work placement with Dunbia where he is working within the retail packing centre. He said, “The money I received from Dunbia was a great assistance at the start of my higher education at Greenmount and helped to pay my tuition fees. It is most encouraging that companies such as Dunbia are willing to invest in young people embarking on a career within agriculture. The company has also provided invaluable experience for work placement. I would encourage all first year students hoping to study a higher education programme at Greenmount to compete for a bursary – it really makes a difference.” Dunbia along with other leading organisations within the agri – food sector will again be providing financial bursaries to students hoping to commence higher education at Greenmount Campus in September 2010. If you are interested in applying for a bursary, then come to Greenmount on Wednesday 18 August at 12.30 pm for the launch of the Bursary Awards for the 2010 – 2011 academic year. This is an opportunity not to be missed with the chance to receive £1,000 towards studying at Greenmount.
