Cooking up a career change at CAFRE
25 August 2009 Mary Breen initially trained as a cook and spent her early career working in various catering establishments. However she felt the need for new challenges to further her interests in food and this led her to the College of Agriculture, Food and Rural Enterprise, Loughry Campus where she graduated in June 2009 with a National Diploma in Food Technology. Mary quickly secured employment and is working in the laboratory of Armaghdown Creameries enjoying every moment in her new role. Mary commented “It was initially challenging returning to full-time study, especially with a family to consider. However after a short time I realised it was the best decision I ever made. Loughry staff are exceptionally helpful and supportive and the subjects I studied were interesting and relevant. After the second day I did not feel one bit out of place and really enjoyed all aspects of the course. My previous work experience was of great benefit in the more practical subjects such as Food Manufacture and New Product Development” I would definitely encourage people who are thinking about a career change or returning to full-time study to consider such a course”. Mary enjoyed the experience so much and plans to enhance her career by studying for a degree in Food Technology at Loughry Campus on a part-time basis. If you work in any area of the food industry and feel that you would like to enhance your career prospects and broaden your horizons, give us a call at Loughry Campus. We offer a wide range of food related courses and in Mary’s words are “very student friendly”.
