Fiona returns to Loughry Campus!
13 May 2009

The College of Agriculture, Food and Rural Enterprise, at Loughry was delighted to host a school visit to the Cookstown Campus. What was even better the member of staff to organise the Year 11 trip was a former student from the College.

Fiona Sharkey (Dungannon) completed her BSc (Hons) Degree in Food Supply Management at Loughry Campus in June 2008 and applied to study for a postgraduate qualification. Fiona is currently completing a PGCE in Home Economics at the University of Ulster.

As part of her studies Fiona has two practical teaching placements to complete, one with Omagh Academy and the other with Aughnacloy College.

Remembering her happy times and knowing the excellent careers available in food, Fiona organised a study trip to Loughry for her Year 11 Aughnacloy College students.

School Principal Mr Berry and students Matthew Morrow and Nathan Kidney were among those shown the modern food, packaging and science facilities at Loughry Campus and to hear about the great career opportunities in food.

Heather Thornton, a lecturer on the Degree programme, said “It was great to see Fiona again, and to hear how well she is progressing through her postgraduate course. The combination of subjects on the Food Supply Management course offers the perfect base for Home Economics teaching, a qualification which has recently been greatly sought after in schools.”
