Settling into Life at Loughry

By Emma Hall, BSc Food Technology, Loughry Campus

“Induction week is well over and the Freshers disco is a distant memory.  As I break for study week, I have had time to reflect on my first six weeks of life at Loughry and how I have settled in.

It seems only a blink since I, along with all the other ‘new’ students waited anxiously to register for our courses, knowing very few around me.  How things have changed! After a very short time, I was on first name terms with my fellow students and words such as ‘learning objectives’ and ‘assessment strategies’ have become part of my newfound student lingo.

Before I came to Loughry, I was told by past students that Loughry life is unique and I have recently just found out what they mean.  Loughry students regularly fundraise for various charities throughout the year and with October being Breast Cancer Awareness month, we decided to try and raise some money for this worthy cause by having a ‘Wear it Pink’ day.  Staff and students joined in on our pink madness with some weird and wonderful pink outfits on display.  As well as collecting money, we held a raffle at our Halloween disco with proceeds going to our collection. In total we raised £500.

The students are already looking forward to our next fundraiser which is for ‘Children in Need’ in which we are planning a number of activities including a ‘bed push’ into Cookstown.  Before that however, we may have some work to do!”
