Sweet Sensations  on Communication Course

My name is Rachelle Coyle and I am currently half way through studying for my MSc in Communication at Loughry Campus. The past three months have just flown by and my tutors promise me that next semester will be even more hectic! Something to really look forward to!

One of the features that attracted me to the course was the “learning by doing” approach. In the very first week we were thrown in at the deep end when we had to prepare and present a business case for a rural diversification enterprise to some very stern looking tutors. I am still trying to figure out if they were acting or if they really are that stern!

One of my modules looked at how to deliver effective training: it is all very well sitting in class discussing how to do this in theory but it is a very different matter when it is you at the front of the class. We had to go out to local secondary schools and deliver training to sixth form students in interview techniques. There were lots of highs and lows when I was out in the schools, but at the end it was a really great feeling to think that I was helping these students improve their interview skills.

Obviously one of the most enjoyable parts of this practical approach to the course was going into the Food Technology Centre to produce chocolate. As well as the hard job of having to quality assure our efforts thoroughly, it was really interesting to get an insight into a food manufacturing process. This semester we have lots more practical assignments lined up.  It is really hard work at the time but sure won’t it be great for the CV and hopefully help me when I go for an interview! The graduate job hunting process is the toughest assignment of all and my MSc in communication will be key to my success.
