By Julie McLaughlin, BSc. Food Supply Management student, Loughry Campus“My name is Julie McLaughlin and I am a full time student on the Food Supply Management degree at Loughry Campus in Cookstown. I have successfully completed the second year of the programme and have recently commenced my summer work placement with an international transportation business. The company provides a logistics service for chilled and frozen food products using a fleet of modern dual compartment refrigerated trailers. My role in the business is interesting and varied. I deal directly with clients to book in stock and schedule their delivery requirements. I arrange other third party logistics support for overseas transportation and keep in touch with the fleet drivers to obtain information on delivery times. The experience is providing an excellent development opportunity and will greatly enhance my CV. Through my studies I have got really interested in the logistics of moving food produce within the supply chain and am grateful that Loughry have assisted me in obtaining an insight into this role as this is where I want to develop my career after graduating. In my spare time I enjoy playing an active role in Castlecaulfield Young Farmers Club of which I am presently Treasurer. A highlight of the past year was assisting with the organization of activities celebrating the 50th anniversary of the club. I am also an Assistant Cub Scout leader and help run an active programme of events to enable the cubs to gain badges in areas such as fitness, cooking, and road safety. I know the food industry offers excellent career opportunities, which is really important in the current economic climate, and I am looking forward to graduating from Loughry Campus and gaining employment in this dynamic industry sector.”
