NPTC Level 2 Diploma in Work-based Horticulture (Sports Turf-Greenkeeper)

(Level 2 Apprenticeship in Horticulture)

Course Aim

This course aims to provide the appropriate skills, knowledge and competencies for responsible positions within the sports turf sector of the amenity horticulture industry. The course is designed for those who are already working as trainee and assistant greenkeepers or groundspersons.

Students attend college on a day-release basis from September to May. Teaching includes formal classwork, practical skills training and assessment, demonstrations and visits.

This course is comprised of twelve units:

  • Establish and maintain working relationships with others
  • Establishing plants and/or seeds in soil
  • Maintain and develop personal performance
  • Maintain the condition of sports turf surfaces
  • Maintain the health of sports turf
  • Monitoring and maintaining Health and Safety
  • Prepare and operate a tractor with attachments
  • Preparing ground for seeding and planting
  • Renovate and repair sports turf surfaces
  • Use and maintain non-powered and hand held powered tools
  • Use and maintain pedestrian controlled powered equipment
  • Use and maintain ride-on powered equipment

Students who wish to achieve the Level 2 Apprenticeship in Horticulture and have not attained a Grade C or above in English and Mathematics at GCSE or equivalent, have to complete Essential Skills in Numeracy and Literacy. Completion of Essential Skills are optional for students on the NPTC Level 2 Diploma in Workbased Horticulture.

Entry Requirements:

Applicants must be employed or self-employed in a relevant job within the sports turf sector for at least three days per week. Normally two Grade Cs or three Grade Ds at GCSE including English and Mathematics. Students who have not attained a Grade C or above in English and Mathematics at GCSE or equivalent, will be encouraged to complete Essential Skills in Numeracy and Literacy.

Progression Opportunities:

Greenkeepers with a Level 2 qualification can become Assistant and Head greenkeepers. Students can progress onto the Advanced National Certificate in Sports and Amenity Turf Management.
