CAFRE currently support the sports turf industry with a suite of sports turf education programmes within the horticulture provision, based at Greenmount campus. Currently there are part and full time programmes including: Level 2 Diploma in Work-based Horticulture (Sportsturf-Greenkeeper; Advanced National Certificate at level 3; and Foundation degree/ Certificate of Higher Education at level 4. Until now there has not been a full-time sports turf programme for young people.
CAFRE, in partnership with the Golfing Union of Ireland (GUI), opened the Greenkeeping Cadetship programme. The programme is targeted at young people (age 17-25) with a keen interest in developing a career in green keeping. GUI are supporting two cadetships this year with a generous financial bursary of £7500 each for one year.
Each cadetship will run from 1 September to 31 August each year. Successful candidates must be have relevant experience and have a minimum of four GCSE passes or equivalent including Mathematics and English. Cadets will enroll on the Level 2 Diploma in Work-based Horticulture Sportsturf-Greenkeeper programme and will complete one academic year at Greenmount, taking formal classes two days per week to complete the Diploma. In addition they will undertake practical instruction for three days per week performing practical duties and assessments on the grounds and sports turf areas on campus. The cadets will also complete a number of certified short courses such as first aid, manual handling and pesticide application. CAFRE will release GUI Bursary monies to the cadets throughout the year to support them whilst under training.
