Course Aim:

Course NVQ Level 2 in Land-based Service Engineering

Course Content:

This award is a vocational qualification for those with some formal training in machinery maintenance and repair, who wish to obtain a work-based qualification.

Career destinations

As the course is work-based, prospective students must be employed as fitters or mechanics before enrolling on the programme. Many will progress to service technician posts with their employers and undertake further qualifications.

Student View: Neil Gourley, Cookstown

Neil is currently working towards his NVQ Level 2 while working for an independent John Deere specialist, William Hunter. He has been getting ample opportunity to develop his skills as a machinery mechanic under William’s guidance.

"I do a lot of general servicing and repairs as well as the more complex jobs.  I’ve just finished installing a new head gasket on a tractor which had a problem with overheating.”

Course Duration:

Up to two years (depending on rate of progress).

Entry requirements:

Normally four GCSEs at Grade C or above including English and Mathematics. Applicants must be employed as trainee service engineering technicians in the land-based sector.

Applicants who can demonstrate significant relevant industry experience will also be considered. These applicants may be required to submit work-based evidence and undertake written assessments and/or practical competence tests as part of the assessment.
