Outline details of these events which took place are listed below.

February

  • Woodland TrustExternal link
    A 5 day woodland conservation, education and tree planting event was held between 4th – 8th February with approximately 600 school children from across Northern Ireland attending. A grove of over 1000 native trees was planted by the children to form a commemorative Loughry Centenial Wood.
  • Nutrition Lecture
    A Science lecture on the theme of human nutrition was held on 12th February and attended by over 50 people. This was organised by the Northern Ireland Institute of Food Science & Technology and Professor Helene McNulty, a specialist in folate nutrition at the Northern Ireland Centre for Food and Health (University of Ulster), was guest speaker.

March

  • Milk Industry Conference (pdf 67.5KB)
    An international conference took place on 12th March. The event was organised jointly by Dairy UK, Ulster Farmers Union, Society of Dairy Technology & DARD and celebrated Loughry’s 100 year involvement with the local dairy industry. This event brought together 108 stakeholders from the milk supply chain to review issues on global and European milk production, innovation and marketing milk products.

April

  • Agriculture Alumni Reunion
    A reunion dinner took place on 2nd April and provided an opportunity for 130 people, previously involved in agriculture education programmes with a chance to meet old friends, reminisce and tour the facilities.

June

  • Launch of Centenary Book
    A centenary book recording the history of Loughry over the last 100 years and containing many stories and memories as well as historical facts and figures, was launched on 25th June and is available from the Campus or through this website.
  • Business Incubation 10th Anniversary
    2008 also marks the 10th anniversary of the Food Busines Incubation Centre and an event was held on 11th June to mark the occasion. DARD Minister, Michelle Gildernew MP, MLA, met with members of the FBIC Advisory Board and the tenant businesses.
  • Student Awards Day
    Student Awards day for current graduates was held on Wednesday 25th June.
  • Centenial Library
    A new library facility in the Food Technology Centre was opened by DARD Minister, Michelle Gildernew MP, MLA on 25th June.
  • Poultry Alumni Reunion
    A poultry conference was held on Thursday 26th June to address the key issues facing the sector. The conference was organised by the Poultry Association Northern Ireland and in parallel with a reunion for past staff and students. 180 participants took the opportunity to meet for lunch and College tours during the day

August

  • Centenary Road Race
    180 people took part in a 5 mile road race on Friday 8th August organised by Sperrin Harriers. The race started and finished at Loughry and also celebrated Loughry’s recent developments in nutrition and health programmes.

September

  • Dairy Alumni Reunion
    71 people attended a reunion for those who attended Dairy education programmes during the 60's and 70's on 3rd September. The event provided an opportunity to meet and reminisce about old times as well as seeing how facilities and programmes have changed to meet the future needs of the industry.
  • Protecting the Past
    An event to record the environmental improvements (undertaken by DARD & DOE) at the historic Giant’s Grave site.

October

  • Food and Packaging Alumni Reunion
    A reunion dinner for those who attended Food programmes was held on Friday 24 October. 85 people attended the event which provided an opportunity to meet and reminisce about old times as well as seeing how facilities and programmes have changed to meet the needs of the industry.

November

  • Staff Centenary Celebration
    The above event has been cancelled.
  • Communication Alumni 40th Anniversary Reunion
    A reunion dinner on Friday 14th November for those who attended Communication programmes over the last 40 years. A chance to meet old friends, reminisce and tour the facilities.

December

  • Carol Service
    A carol service to mark the end of the centenary year took place on Tuesday 9th December for staff and students of Loughry and invited choirs from local schools.
  • Centenial Quiz
    A staff quiz - with questions related to issues and events over each decade of the past 100 years - took place on 17th December.
