Aim
To train existing personnel within the equine industry in Northern Ireland to be competent in the skills associated with the handling and production of Young stock.
Target audience
Horse owners and trainers or those currently involved in the breaking and training young horses or those who wish to do so.
Entry requirements
Applicants must be 16 years of age or over and have experience in working with horses.
Course structure
This course lasts 1 full day. It is a very practical course and includes demonstrations, theory and practical hands on for students.
Course content
The course will cover the following topics related to young stock handling:
- Understanding horse behaviour
- Approaching and handling the foal, yearling, 2 year old, 3 year old
- Putting tack on the horse for the first time
- Lungeing the young horse for the first time (theory only)
- Long-reining
- Backing the young horse
- Loose jumping (theory only)
- Early training/ mental fitness of the young horse
Cost
This course is free to equine breeders/ producers whose business is located within Northern Ireland. However a refundable deposit of £30 is required to book a place on this course. Applicants from Great Britain or Republic of Ireland must pay the full course fee of £35 in order to book a place on the course, which is non-refundable.
