Foaling Course

Aim

This one day course is designed for large and small horse breeders to give them a background and understanding of managing the pregnant mare, foaling the mare and how to care for the newborn foal.

Entry requirements

Applicants must be 16 years of age or over.

Course structure

This course lasts 1 day.

Course content

The course will cover the following topics:

  • Care of the in-foal mare
  • Complications of late pregnancy
  • Preparation of foaling area
  • Aids to assist foaling
  • Signs of foaling
  • Normal foaling
  • Problems when foaling
  • Post parturition checks
  • New born foal examination
  • Diseases of the newborn foal
  • The orphan foal/foster mare

Cost

This course is free to equine breeders/ producers whose business is located within Northern Ireland. However a refundable deposit of £30 is required to book a place on this course. Applicants from Great Britain or Republic of Ireland must pay the full course fee of £35 in order to book a place on the course, which is non-refundable
